What are ETFs?
Exchange Traded Funds, or ETFs, are baskets of assets that trade on stock exchanges. Most are designed to track the performance of a specific index covering anything from the broad U.S. and International markets to specific market sectors (such as energy, health care, banking, etc.), to even alternative investments (such as REITs, commodities, currencies, etc.).

How can you trade ETFs?
Because ETFs trade on stock exchanges, they can be bought and sold any time the markets are open. This intraday liquidity is one of the major advantages that have made ETFs so popular. Some others include:

  • Diversified and targeted investing is made simpler
  • Transparency - each security in an ETF is known at any point in time
  • Generally lower expense ratios than actively managed mutual funds
  • Index ETFs generally pay little or no capital gains distributions
  • Many ETFs offer options, affording investors more sophisticated trading strategies

Some disadvantages of ETFs include:

  • Prices are influenced by market forces and therefore ETFs may not trade at their net asset values
  • Dividends are paid out since ETFs do not reinvestment them
  • Generally not appropriate for systematic investors since each transaction carries a commission
  • Despite minor disadvantages, ETFs are a popular investment choice for investors.
